Don’t Miss the Ever-Growing Collection of Art at Quackenbush Square!

August 30, 2024

ParkAlbany’s public art collection has expanded once more with the addition of two new installations at Quackenbush Square in Downtown Albany!

Prominently located at the front of Quackenbush Square, directly across from the newly opened Clinton Market Collective, is “The Meeting of Houses” by artist Jeremy Entwistle of French Mountain Studio. This impressive new addition to Quackenbush Square’s art collection stands ten feet tall and draws inspiration from the City of Albany’s collection of concrete brutalist and historic wooden architecture.

Implementing a unique blend of recognizable textures and forms with abstractions of the figure and dissections of architecture, this work is attempting to tie together a diverse history of habitations that are foundational to our citizenry.” – said artist Jeremy Entwistle “The Meeting of Houses showcases the relationship between man and domicile, and how buildings have been critical structures from our humble beginnings to present day. “

“The Meeting of Houses” was installed on August 8th 2024.This is Jeremy’s second piece to be put on display in Quackenbush Square, with the first being “Hypaethral Redux” which was installed one year prior in August 2023.

In addition to the installation of the new sculpture at the front of the square, ParkAlbany also partnered with the Albany Barn to have local artists paint ten, single-space parking meters that had been removed from city streets. This beautiful collection of up-cycled old meters can be found further back in Quackenbush Square, under the Albany Skyway and across from the Quackenbush Garage and Lot.

“Two of our favorite things at Albany Barn Inc. are 1) when we get to work with a valued community partner on a project, and 2) we get to task our artists with creating beautiful works of art on non-traditional canvases. So this collaboration with Albany Parking Authority on revitalizing old parking meters was a no-brainer!  We love how unique they all are and how they beautifully represent the artists that live and work in our spaces.” said Casey Polomaine – Executive Director of the Albany Barn

A concrete underpass with a painted mural of an eagle. Six paint-decorated utility posts line a park path. A couple of trees and a few parked vehicles are visible nearby. Overcast sky overhead.

Eight of the ten painted meters were installed in August 2024, with installation of the two remaining meters planned for Fall 2024. Contributors to this unique collection of art include:

  • Albany Barn
  • Casey Polomaine
  • Cat Jones
  • Christie Rose
  • Jacob Pickett and Footloose Theatre Programs
  • Kayla Elk
  • Lexi Hannah
  • Samirah Muhammad
  • Valerie Kilgallen

Both the new sculpture and painted meters join fifteen existing art pieces, including a dozen murals that were created as part of the award-winning Capital Walls program, at Quackenbush Square and the adjacent Quackenbush Garage.
