ALBANY - In just one year, the Albany Parking Authority (APA) has significantly improved parking availability and convenience in downtown Albany by replacing older coin only single-space meters, installing highly visible ParkAlbany signs on the city's three parking garages, offering Palace Theatre patrons free patron parking and announcing several savings programs.
"It has been a tremendous year in terms of making parking in Albany more efficient, affordable and recognizable for residents, commuters and visitors," said Michael Klein, Executive Director of the Albany Parking Authority. "Parking has been one of Albany's best kept secrets, but now drivers can quickly locate the APA garages and take advantage of the convenience they offer."
Since installing new multi-space parking meters that accept payments by credit and debit cards as well as coinage, customers may park on-street as long as they like with close proximity to the Capitol and downtown Albany's central business district. An average of 1,347 people use the meters each day, and to date there have been a total of 366,648 uses. Based on the success of the first and second set of installations, a third phase is being performed. "Downtown parking is more accessible than ever." said Klein. "In addition to convenience, the new meters enhance the look of the streets and make it easier to shop at downtown businesses".
New Signs Help Drivers Find Parking
The APA installed new wayfinding signs through downtown Albany, making it easier to locate their parking facilities. The APA also renamed the Columbia Garage to the Riverfront Garage, more accurately reflecting its location. ParkAlbany signage is now visible on all APA garages. The new sign packages are strategically positioned and designed to increase driver awareness of all the convenient and well-lit downtown parking available.
Free Parking for Palace Theatre Events
Also in 2012, a new partnership with the Palace Theatre was unveiled to offer free parking for all Palace Theatre evetns in the APA's Quackenbush garage on Broadway. Located a short distance from the Palace Theatre, the APA's Quackenbush Garage provides 897 convenient spaces.
This year the APA featured a number of savings initiatives including its Parking Incentive Program (PIP), which cuts new monthly parking customer's rates by 50 percent. APA's 2 Blocks, 2 Bucks, 2 Easy parking initiative allows $2 parking after 6 p.m. in all three APA garages except when special events are taking place. This is particularly convenient for those parking in the well-lit Riverfront Garage, open 24/7, and located only two blocks from downtown's Entertainment District and North Pearl Street. The APA also announced a "Seasonal Savings" rate that would allow drivers to park in the Riverfront, Green-Hudson and Quackenbush garages for a flat rate of $100/month, for up to 4 months starting in December. The APA has also announced free parking at metered spaces on upcoming holidays, including Christmas and New Year's Day.
Capitol Region residents are encouraged to take advantage of all these opportunities and save money on monthly parking. Contact the Albany Parking Authority or visit: www.ParkAlbany.com for more information.
